‘Rumour has it...’ has become a sort of ironic slogan for Apple in the lead up to its big autumn announcements with much talk and hype surrounding the new products that the Cupertino laboratory of cool will be unveiling. And today is the day when the rumours will be quelled or indeed confirmed.
So what is the world expecting from the titans of technology today?
Some reports suggest that we will see the unveiling of the iPhone 6 which will come in two (larger) screen sizes with unbreakable sapphire glass (very welcome we say). LA Times journalist Amy Hubbard writes about rumours surrounding the rumour: ‘Touching this phone will provide a wealth of physical sensations: haptic feedback will give iPhone 6 a new feel when you tap it, different vibrations depending on the app used’. She also covers the rumour about a free Bono coming with the purchase of the 6, cue the new U2 album and another rumour that the Irish rockers are planning to release the album live on stage this evening (could this be the ‘One More Thing’?!).
Forbes is predicting that an iWatch, if that’s what it will be called, will be announced. The wearables market has already garnered a huge amount of attention in recent times as tech companies have been inventing extensively in this area and launching never-seen-before devices at a familiar breathtaking ‘tech’ speed. Unusually, Apple won’t be the first to introduce such a wearable and if a new watch device is unveiled later today, it will have to trump its rivals spectacularly in the design and functionality stakes in order to make a significant impact in this rapidly growing market.
Rumour has it….mobile payments will also feature in today’s announcement and that a new NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled iPhone 6 will be revealed with Apple aiming to not just revolutionise but own the mobile payments market.
Whatever Tim Cook announces today, you can be sure that Apple will be flying high in the social media stratosphere. And you can tune into this with Time Magazine- it has published a fun article on the big event called Apple’s Announcement Bingo. As the title suggests, you just have to tune into the live stream (6pm GMT) and mark off your card which predictions come true- if you get 5 in a row you win…nothing, unfortunately but tweet your card to @MONEY along with your thoughts on the event and they’ll re-tweet the best ones.
So will we be treated to ‘One More Thing’ on this occasion? We hope so! It’s never too soon to start thinking about our Christmas wish list (new U2 album optional).
